On Monday's show during the Wheel of News, Lou read a article about a online beauty contest for nuns a priest is starting. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26379900/. Bob Dunning mentioned this in the final minutes of his show. Later as I just happened to hear Father Dave talk about it on Busted Halo. The opinions differed. Dunning didn't like it, Lino and Lou found it wrong on several different levels, Father Dave and his producer Robin were discussing ways to book the priest because they thought it was a great idea. Just goes to show running a radio channel or the Church for that matter can be complicated with so many different views. I'm sure the priest's who is holding this contest email is full of both praise and hate mail. Just like Lino's.
I don't like the idea of the Ms. Sister contest. Why? Because, as a guy, my first reaction was, "Hey, cool!" :-)
I would hope that our wonderful religious sisters would have better things to do than worry about whether they're hot enough to be in some weirdo priest's pagent.
I'm sorry I was busy all day and missed hearing this story/discussion... It does make me laugh. But being "in the business" for almost 10 years, and knowing the "competition" -well, there's part of me waiting for Lou to hit the "creepy" button
I don't know...I know that elderly people at nursing homes have beauty pageants, not so people can gawk, but because it's fun, and it feels good to be considered attractive.
Whether or not others gawk or laugh, if these sisters want to participate, I'll smile and support that. They deserve a little fun and positive feelings about themselves.
I know "It just feels creepy" is not a very compelling argument, but I'm sticking to it! :-)

While it's great for the world to see young, vibrant women answer the call to relgious life, I think this "pageant" is doing it in a wordly way. Remember, we're to be IN the world, not OF the world!
It devotes too much to the wordly view of beauty, rather than SPIRITUAL beauty... Quite often, those "decrepit, little old nuns are the MOST beautiful people in the world! Think Mother Teresa!!

I would hope that the priest would have too much trouble finding sisters willing to participate. My cousin is a nun and I think she would sooner gouge her eyes out than participate in a beauty contest.
genkillz, I also remember Esther. God blessed her with physical beauty. If God gives you a gift, why hide it?
dustin, it's not about hiding gifts God has given (if I believed we should do that, I'd suggest we wear burqas!). It's wonderful to be able to recognize and appreciate the beauty of God's creation (He has graced the world with alot of really beautiful people!).
It just strikes me as weirdly inappropriate that a Catholic priest would spearhead this religious sister "pageant". I get a similar feeling when I think of Fr. Andrew Greeley writing romance novels... its just creepy.
I have the privelege of knowing some amazing, holy priests, and I'm fairly certain they wouldn't go for this...
