An entry on a Catholic blog called "Silent Servants" bashed Lino for his banter with "Mike The Adulterer" written about in the New York Times article. The blogger also criticizes The Catholic Guy for having Howard Stern as one of his "idols." (By the way, Lino never claimed claimed Stern was an "idol" of his.)
I've already written a polite comment defending Lino on the blog. I'd appreciate if anyone out there has a couple minutes, they could do so, too.
Remember to be "charitable" as we say in Catholic circles. :-)
Hey Dan -
I appreciate what you're trying to do - and maybe you're right in doing that and encouraging others to do so.
For me, maybe my patience has worn thin on this. Catholics (who are connected and interested in their faith) realize, if they're honest, there's a heck of a lot of people who aren't coming to church anymore. And if they're REALLY honest, they realize we need to do something to engage the culture and engage people WHERE THEY'RE AT...
If some of these "critics" could take a moment to say "Hey, this is SPONSORED BY THE ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW YORK - Heck, the Cardinal Archbishop knows this host by name... perhaps there's more to this than simply a NY Times story/slant/perspective?"
I don't know - I've been on the receiving end of similar criticism and I'm not trying to be closedminded, but I really have come to a point where I ignore a lot of these types of voices.
When I was in college, my journalism advisor always told us that we had to always be wearing our "steel jeans" because we would get kicked in the butt all the time. I think it's the same thing here.
Lino is a target and I'm sure there will be more of the same in the future from people who have a certain mindset and are not open to anything outside of that. In those cases, ignoring it can be the best way to handle it because anything else is like banging your head against a brick wall.
But I can totally understand Dan's desire to strike back. Unfortunately it rarely achieves much because brick walls are pretty dense.
Hi Father Jim,
I guess from my college journalism background, I'm a little guilty of making headlines a little bit more dramatic to get people's attention. I figured "Help defend Lino!" would get more attention than "A blogger's thoughts on Lino's recent New York Times Article." :-)
I know what you're saying about how it's best to ignore negativity at times. I guess it's always good to pick your battles. I wouldn't want to see fans trounce on anyone on the internet any time they say something mildly negative about Lino. But I do think fans are interested in what other people on the net think of the Catholic Guy besides the bloggers here at CatholicGuyShow.com.
The blog I mentioned, though, is run by a person who seems reasonable and seemed to just be misinformed about Lino. If I thought he was just some crazy nut, I wouldn't have encouraged people to go visit there.
Take care ya'll!
- Dan
I couldn't resist posting a comment there...
You're right, Dan, he seems like someone who is misinformed rather than talabanistic. Hopefully he will give Lino a listen to see what the show is really about.
And hopefully if he does it won't be during a time when Lino is doing Howard Stern trivia!
