Memorial Day Running Diary

That's right, a live show on a day that most other people have off. And since I have a job that makes me work Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., I haven't been able to do one of these running journals in quite some time (the roast was the last one). But since Lino and crew have to work today, why should I take the day off?

It should be fun, and we should also note that Kristen from Houston, Texas will be doing a running diary of Thursday's lock-in show (Lino, Lou and Maureen go live at Midnight eastern, 9 p.m. West Coast). Much easier to do for her since she has been temporarily placed in California.

Anyways, we'll see you here at catholicguyshow.com in 45 minutes!

3:01 p.m. - "How about a live Memorial Day show?" Lino asked to start the show. A note to the moustaches that run the station: Why not give the people who work on The Catholic Channel the day off on Memorial Day next year? And Labor Day this year? Happy hosts make for great radio, and improving their working life will translate into better shows.

3:02 p.m. - Lino dedicates today's show to all listeners who are also working today. Call 888-322-8465 if you are working, and Lino might choose you specifically to dedicate to you.

3:08 p.m. - Nice moment from Lino talking about the importance of remembering our veterans. Great way to start the show, and as the son of a former sailor, it's much appreciated for Lino and crew to give a brief history of the holiday as well. We need to remember the true meaning of this day, instead of losing that in the midst of shopping bargains.

3:10 p.m. - Nobody who is at work calling in to the show. Lou burned his lip over the weekend as well. I can't call in due to appearing on that segment Friday, and due to the fact that I am at home. This might actually be the first time that Lino and crew have mentioned on-air that they aren't getting any calls.

3:13 p.m. - Gary in Shreveport, La., is today's first caller. He's actually working, driving an 18-wheeler. Gary, for those who may have forgotten, was inspired by Lino to go back to the Sacrament of Reconciliation after 50 years. I smell a pay raise.

3:16 p.m. - "Now I'm dejected because we have to really do the show whether I like it or not." Lino is visibly bummed out because he has to put on the show, instead of just lazing around the studio not doing anything. Personally, I'd like to hear what THAT show would have sounded like. Was hoping they'd have a few beers in studio, maybe send Krista the intern to the street for some street meat. "Lazy with Lino" would have been a great show.

3:19 p.m. - Break time. An update on Lino's relationship status, plus Music Monday and Win Lou's Money coming up next!

3:23 p.m. - Music Mondays! But no Kayla for the third week in a row! But today the songs come from Catholicjukebox.com, with Lino, Lou and Maureen rating the songs. Gotta say, I preferred the old way of the crew each picking out a song.

Up first, My Everything by Tuesday Bloom. Lino goes three noses (he recognized the quality of the song, but thought it was more of a girls song), but, Maureen goes four noses, and Lou goes with 3.5 noses (Lou: I might enjoy it if nobody was around). 10.5 overall.

Next, Earth Sings Out by Emanuel Worship. Lino thought it sounded a little more holier than thou, but gave it 3 out of 5. He thought he should give it more, but in the Memorial Day mindset, didn't think it fit the outdoors, bar-b-que mood. Maureen gave it 3 noses, and Lou gave it 3 as well. 9 overall.

Up third, Send Me by Billie Tarascio. Again, Lino thought that girls could rock out to the song easier than a guy could, and gave it three noses. "A very pleasant song," Lino said. "I hope I'm not being sexist," Lino said. To which Lou replied, "You are being sexist." Maureen gave it four noses, and Lou gave it 2.5 noses. "I'm sorry, it's just not...not that it's bad, it just doesn't do anything for me." 9.5 noses.

Next, The Lee Roessler Band sings Mile Away. Lino mentioned that the band had been on the show previously. "I'm a fan of that song...they did something. They said something," Lino said, who gave it four noses from Lino. Maureen gave it 4.5 noses, and Lou gave it 4 noses. 12.5 noses overall, today's big winner.

A very laid back show today. The crew is cracking themselves up with Michael Jackson references.

And finally, Milo's Rekindled. Lino, Maureen and Lou each gave the song 3.5 noses. 10.5 overall.

3:45 p.m. - Break time. Up next, Lino's relationship update!!!

3:49 p.m. - Lino reading off comments about his Facebook status update. Lino reminds us that Lou and Maureen chose girls for Lino to date, along with writing the emails for Lino.

3:51 p.m. - An update on those women that Lou and Maureen picked: Neither of those choices wrote Lino back. Great that Lino went along with the idea, but sad that he didn't get a response. It's those women's loss though. They're missing out on a great guy!

3:55 p.m. - Maureen's guess: An ex-girlfriend resurfaced. That Lino is now with an ex. "That way, there's no groundwork to be laid, can just jump right in." Lou's guess was that Lino got a housepet or a fish.

3:56 p.m. - Lino's news: He's in a relationship...with God! But he could be in a relationship very soon, changing in advance of the future relationship he could very well be in. Looks like there's some romantic hope for the future!

4:02 p.m. - Paul called in to say "I think you're abusing Facebook." Lino seems to let some people down, who were really hoping that he had found love, eros style. I gotta say, I'm a little let down, but knowing that there is something on the horizon, makes me smile.

4:21 p.m. - The secular media is already on this story

4:32 p.m. - Lino's talking about not going to Mass because of being in a state of Mortal Sin, and being tempted by Satan to just miss Mass. Afterall, he's not receiving Eucharist, wy not just skip Mass this week and confess it next week?

This is a temptation that I think is all too common, and one I deal with. It's nice to hear it verbally from someone else that they too struggle with this.

But then Lino talked about a girl he had a crush on being at Mass. And now, Lino's in a panic, wondering what the girl is going to think of him for not taking Eucharist, immediately regretting his crazy night out. However, it's a girl that Lino has known, and Lino said that he might email her.

Thoughts on this? - So glad Lino went to Mass on Sunday. It seems like something the devil would do...get him to miss out on something great God has planned.

I hope that Lino doesn't wimp out and actually follows through with emailing her. Perhaps that's the romance that could be weeks away.

4:43 p.m. - Win Lou's Money! Call 888-322-8465 if you can defeat Lou. You actually win real money in this segment, instead of having to donate it to keep the station alive.

4:48 p.m. - Lou got one out of seven. Todd, a non-Catholic, also got one out of seven, making Lou lose out on some dough. Lou, c'mon man. You're a smart dude, you should get all seven right!

Speaking of which, I think it would be genius if Maureen spends six months secretly studying all the aspects of the faith. Then when Lino plays Are You Smarter Than a Bad Catholic, Maureen can just destroy the callers and take Lino and Lou by surprise. That would be so much fun, hearing Maureen name all 30+ doctors of the Church in 60 seconds.

4:57 p.m. - Lou gets three, Eric also gets three. However, Lou got the answers 20 seconds quicker, so Lou wins his money. But Lou, not knowing Eve was the mother of Cain and Abel? What a bummer!!!

Break time. Up next, another round, The World Beyond Lino, and the annual debate on how to dress at Mass! Call 888-3-Catholic to be a part of the fun!

5:05 p.m. - An interesting spin to Win Lou's Money...two listeners playing against each other. However, it remains to be seen if honesty is involved, since one listener could listen to the radio while the other gets questions fed to them. Would you cheat in that instance? I probably would...if I can get away with doing something wrong, I'll usually do it.

And don't judge. It's just human nature.

5:11 p.m. - Good to hear the intern working today...can hear a woman giggling in the background that is not Maureen. And why should the intern get today off? Lino now reading the post Krista the Intern left on show preparation. A very good read! The insight Lino gives to this is that Krista actually uses a tape recorder and gets quotes, journalist-style. This is awesome, as it shows just how seriously she takes writing for us.

It's work ethic like that that will take Krista far in life. Speaking of which, remember that newspaper page I just wrote? How cool would it be if we had legit stories written by our web staff and Krista? We could make a really great newspaper.

Hit me up if anyone wants to pursue this.

5:23 p.m. - Talking about what kind of clothes you should wear to Mass, since summer is here, next! 888-322-8465

5:34 p.m. - Many callers are calling to say that they disagree with Lino. He says it's ok to wear shorts, but they say he can't do that because he's showing a lack of reverence. I call B.S. on their logic. When I had to ride a bicycle everywhere two summers ago, I sure as heck was not wearing pants! Thankfully, I had a job that allowed me to do so, but since I had to ride a bicycle 2 and a half miles to Mass each week, I wasn't going to show up with sweaty khakis. What kind of parishioner would I be, subjecting them to my sweatiness.

And then there was the one time when I showed up in shorts and a t-shirt to a Saturday Mass, even after getting a car. And when I apologized to the priest in confession for my shoddy attire, he smiled and told me he liked my shirt. It was a University of Pittsburgh shirt, and he was from Pittsburgh. Booya! The good Father blessed my attire, which proves Lino's point.

5:41 p.m. - As an aside, The Catholic Guy podcast is ranked number 171 in all of the religion and spirituality category at iTunes, right ahead of some guy named Dr. J Vernon McGee. Yeah! Take that McGee!!!

5:53 p.m. - Closing up shop on Memorial Day! What a fun show...too bad they didn't get a day off! If you enjoyed this running diary, check out Kristan from Houston's version Thursday night!

Dr, J. Vernon McGee has been dead for about twenty years. But yay, Lino is beating him!
