Countdown to Glory - Six days

The big 39 is almost here...and we'll be celebrating on Friday, since the Italian will be off in  Italy on his actual birthday.

Lk 12:39-48

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Be sure of this:
if the master of the house had known the hour
when the thief was coming,
he would not have let his house be broken into.
You also must be prepared,
for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”
Then Peter said,
“Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?”
And the Lord replied,
“Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward
whom the master will put in charge of his servants
to distribute the food allowance at the proper time?
Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so.
Truly, I say to you, he will put him
in charge of all his property.
But if that servant says to himself,
‘My master is delayed in coming,’
and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants,
to eat and drink and get drunk,
then that servant’s master will come
on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour
and will punish the servant severely
and assign him a place with the unfaithful.
That servant who knew his master’s will
but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will
shall be beaten severely;
and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will
but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating
shall be beaten only lightly.
Much will be required of the person entrusted with much,
and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.

I think of Fr. Rob when I see the drunk part of this passage. I also think of Lino when I read this. We never know when Christ will come back. But Jesus wants us to make preparations for his return.

Which is why I'm glad Lino works hard each day on the radio. Instead of slacking off, Lino seemingly performs each day like it's his last on the air. And why wouldn't he? Any lazy person can put together a half-hearted show: working hard on the radio each day is what God would want.

Since we don't know the hour when Christ comes back, it's important to always give our all for him. And with the high quality programming Lino puts on each day, you'd think Jesus was coming back tomorrow.

It's that good.

Countdown to Glory - 7 days

Seven more days until Lino's birthday! But since he'll be gone on his birthday (off to Italy), we'll pull out our special surprise on Friday. Stay tuned!

Lk 12:35-38
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Gird your loins and light your lamps
and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding,
ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.
Blessed are those servants
whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.
Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself,
have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.
And should he come in the second or third watch
and find them prepared in this way,
blessed are those servants.”

We have to be prepared. We have to do everything we can to support Lino. Just as the servants await their master's return from a wedding, so to must we wait for Lino to return from Italy when he leaves next week. We must be vigilant! We must stand up for good Catholic radio, and avoid bad religious talk radio while Lino is absent.

We must be prepared: Once Lino turns 39, he's only got one more year before he turns 40!!! We've gotta make this the best year ever. How can we do that? Listen, don't criticize too much (but criticize a little so we don't look more mindless than we already do), call in and support Lino in everything he does.

Maybe by doing that, we'll be blessed fans!

Countdown to Glory - 8 Days

Let's face it, we've done a mediocre job of keeping the countdown going. Hopefully with only 8 days to go, we'll shape up and do Lino proud. Until then, here are today's readings and how they relate to our favorite radio host, Lino Rulli!!!

Luke 10:1-9
The Lord Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples
whom he sent ahead of him in pairs
to every town and place he intended to visit.
He said to them,
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.
Go on your way;
behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.
Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals;
and greet no one along the way.
Into whatever house you enter,
first say, ‘Peace to this household.’
If a peaceful person lives there,
your peace will rest on him;
but if not, it will return to you.
Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you,
for the laborer deserves payment.
Do not move about from one house to another.
Whatever town you enter and they welcome you,
eat what is set before you,
cure the sick in it and say to them,
‘The Kingdom of God is at hand for you.’”

Here we see one of Christ's greatest commands. To go out and tell others about him. Let them know that the Kingdom of God is at hand. It's that commandment that Lino follows 100 percent on the radio each day.

The laborers are indeed few in Catholic radio. Yes, there are plenty of people out there doing the same thing. And if this sounds like a shot, so be it. But half-heartedly doing a radio show is NOT what God expects. God wants you to work your hardest for him. If it's not your hardest effort, I don't think God would be proud of you.

You can say a lot of things about Lino Rulli (shot!), but lazy definitely isn't one of them. Beneath the fun and witty banter of The Catholic Guy is a man who is working the harvest for God, in a way that reaches others like nobody else can.

Countdown to Glory -13 days

October 13th and 13 days to go. Cool, right! Counting down to Lino's 39th birthday with the daily readings has been a great experience. Taking a look at the readings with a different perspective has me thinking (scary I know) we really have a great opportunity to reflect on our lives within the readings. I encourage all of you to find your own message in these readings (of course only after you read what we have written about our Fearful Leader Lino)

Brothers and sisters:
If you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are obvious:
immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry,
sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy,
outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness,
dissensions, factions, occasions of envy,
drinking bouts, orgies, and the like.
I warn you, as I warned you before,
that those who do such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, generosity,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
Against such there is no law.
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh
with its passions and desires.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.

I had to use this one, I mean, look at it. It is basically God writing out a giant sticky note! It might seem (to some) like Lino trends to the first list, but when we look and listen carefully he is in fact following the the Spirit and helping all of us follow the way to the Lord.

The Lord said:
“Woe to you Pharisees!
You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb,
but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God.
These you should have done, without overlooking the others.
Woe to you Pharisees!
You love the seat of honor in synagogues
and greetings in marketplaces.
Woe to you!
You are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk.”
Then one of the scholars of the law said to him in reply,
“Teacher, by saying this you are insulting us too.”
And he said, “Woe also to you scholars of the law!
You impose on people burdens hard to carry,
but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them.”

not only does the Gospel reading say MINT, but includes insults. I cannot even comment on this. read, reflect, rock on!

Countdown to Glory - 14 days

from October 12 a mere fortnight until the man behind the mic becomes the old man behind the mic.  Today we continue our Countdown to Old Age Glory with the daily reading and how it relates to Lino.  (hey, if it gets Lino to look at the daily readings we are more than happy to stroke his ego. EGO ok!)

After Jesus had spoken,
a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home.
He entered and reclined at table to eat.
The Pharisee was amazed to see
that he did not observe the prescribed washing before the meal.
The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees!
Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish,
inside you are filled with plunder and evil.
You fools!
Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside?
But as to what is within, give alms,
and behold, everything will be clean for you.”

Lino loves a good mocking. In this reading Jesus mocks the Pharisees for being clean and "holy" on the outside but not knowing the love and truth of God on the inside.  Lino knows he has shortcomings, as we all do (his preferred term his hypocrite I believe)  his is not afraid to show us that he works on making the inside holy as well.

Countdown to Glory 15 days

Lk 11:29-32
October 11 gives us 15 days to prepare a celebration for the anniversary of the day Lino came screaming into the world. How better than to take the daily reading and make it about Lino!

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
“This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

Jonah was given a job to do and he didn't want to do it. (hmmm, sound like a certain Minnesotan who thought TV was his life calling and had no interest in radio?)
So God let Jonah get eaten by a whale (I've only got a nose joke for this and there really isn't any need to make Lino more self-conscious)
Once Jonah realized he had to carry out his orders he was successful in spreading God's word. (Lino, suck it up, you are REALLY good at getting people to listen to God's message without appearing 'holier than thou' we want to hear what you have to say, especially since it is a gift from God)

Countdown to Glory - 16 days

October 10 means only 16 days left till The Italian Stalion The Predicament turns "almost 40" so we carry on with a countdown in which we take each day's readings and find a way to apply one of the passages to the life of Lino Rulli. And then, we have something VERY special waiting for Lino on October 26...and no, it won't require a restraining order. *or will it?

Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times
at the word of Elisha, the man of God.
His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child,
and he was clean of his leprosy.
Naaman returned with his whole retinue to the man of God.
On his arrival he stood before Elisha and said,
"Now I know that there is no God in all the earth,
except in Israel.
Please accept a gift from your servant."
Elisha replied, "As the LORD lives whom I serve, I will not take it;"
and despite Naaman's urging, he still refused.
Naaman said: "If you will not accept,
please let me, your servant, have two mule-loads of earth,
for I will no longer offer holocaust or sacrifice
to any other god except to the LORD."
Sometimes God isn't the one 'delivering' the message, in this case Elisha (who I was partly named for) brings the message of God's Love through healing the leper. In this way God is can be found working through Lino and The Catholic Guy Show. Some of us don't hear God calling, but we do hear what Lino has to say. I find the sarcasm and fun making to be a huge catalyst for listening. Naaman was brought to understanding and loving God through Elisha's healing and we have been brought closer to understanding and love of God through Lino's commentary.

Countdown to Glory - 18 days

With 18 days until The Predicament turns 39, we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts (what happened to our countdown this weekend? The goal? Take each day's readings and find a way to apply one of the passages to the life of Lino Rulli. And then, we have something VERY special waiting for Lino on October 26...and no, it won't require a restraining order. Yes, we would have done a 39-day countdown since he'll turn 39, but we're not paid for this, and as such, we show signs of laziness now and then, much to our amusement Lino's annoyance. Enjoy!

Lk 11:15-26

When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said:
“By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons,
he drives out demons.”
Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven.
But he knew their thoughts and said to them,
“Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste
and house will fall against house.
And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?
For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons.
If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul,
by whom do your own people drive them out?
Therefore they will be your judges.
But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons,
then the Kingdom of God has come upon you.
When a strong man fully armed guards his palace,
his possessions are safe.
But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him,
he takes away the armor on which he relied
and distributes the spoils.
Whoever is not with me is against me,
and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
“When an unclean spirit goes out of someone,
it roams through arid regions searching for rest
but, finding none, it says,
‘I shall return to my home from which I came.’
But upon returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order.
Then it goes and brings back seven other spirits
more wicked than itself who move in and dwell there,
and the last condition of that man is worse than the first.”

Jesus is being falsely accused of performing his miracles through the power of Satan. He is easily able to refute those idiots by explaining that a house divided will not stand, then makes the claim that if you aren't with him, you're against him.

This passage of scripture reminds me of the people who accuse Lino's show of being too crass, not Catholic enough, and too much like Howard Stern (I didn't realize being entertaining like Howard was a sin, but whatever). Lino, Lou and Maureen try their hardest each day to put out a good quality Catholic radio show. And for people to accuse it of not being Catholic enough, well, they remind me of those idiots 2,000 years ago.

Criticism is ok. Well thought out differences of opinion, nothing wrong with that. But when you openly rebuke something for not being faithful enough to Church teachings without any evidence to back it up, any shred of credibility, then my friend you are in the wrong. We should support others in the Faith who are trying hard to glorify God. Not tear them down. Because if we are divided, we'll surely fail.

Countdown to Glory - 19 days

With 19 days until The Predicament turns 39, we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts (what happened to our countdown this weekend? Enjoy!

Gal 3:1-5
O stupid Galatians!
Who has bewitched you,
before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified?
I want to learn only this from you:
did you receive the Spirit from works of the law,
or from faith in what you heard?
Are you so stupid?
After beginning with the Spirit,
are you now ending with the flesh?
Did you experience so many things in vain?–
if indeed it was in vain.
Does, then, the one who supplies the Spirit to you
and works mighty deeds among you
do so from works of the law
or from faith in what you heard?

Sometimes it seems like Lino can be a little mean on the air. Most of us know that it's in good fun, but sometimes the goofing can sound a little mean. But don't tell that to St. Paul, as he calls the Galatians stupid in this Bible verse.

Paul's "name calling" might sound harsh, but the man was frustrated. It's the same book in which Paul says he wishes those who frustrated him would just castrate themselves  (5:12). And calling the Galatians  stupid wasn't done just out of immaturity: Paul had a point he wanted to make, and being outrageously blunt was the best way to do it.

So when Lino goofs on a priest or a crew member, don't get mad at him: He's just merely following in the footsteps of St. Paul

Countdown to Glory - 20 days

With 20 days until The Predicament turns 39, we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts (what happened to our countdown this weekend? Enjoy!

Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished,
one of his disciples said to him,
“Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.”
He said to them, “When you pray, say:
Father, hallowed be your name,
your Kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread
and forgive us our sins
for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us,
and do not subject us to the final test.”

What a wonderful teaching moment for the disciples. Jesus tells them how to pray, and gives us The Lord's Prayer, a prayer that Bible Geek said praying once a day for the rest of your life would do wonders for your spiritual life.

Teaching the disciples valuable lessons on how to follow Him was something Christ did often and well. Likewise, when I listen to Lino, I too learn valuable lessons that I can take with me and apply to my spiritual life. It's a topic that's been beaten to death, but Lino's show got me to start going back to church after taking years off, and in turn, got me to convert.

I am extremely grateful for a teacher like Lino. Perhaps if more people listened, we'd have more people dedicated to Christ.

Countdown to Glory - 21 days

With 21 days until The Predicament turns 39, we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts (what happened to our countdown this weekend? The goal? Take each day's readings and find a way to apply one of the passages to the life of Lino Rulli. And then, we have something VERY special waiting for Lino on October 26...and no, it won't require a restraining order. Luke 10:38-42

Jesus entered a village
where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
“Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me.”
The Lord said to her in reply,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her.

Lino's work ethic reminds me a little of Martha. Lino is burdened with much serving for Christ. He lives his life in such a way that it's obvious to all around just how much he spends evangelizing. A three-hour show each day, weekends devoted to talks in faraway lands (mad props to Lou and Maureen for the funny pseudo-hillbilly accents yesterday, btw).

Lino does it all.

Lino's biggest weakness, something he's mentioned on air, is that he get's anxious about the show. He wants to make each show the best ever, and I wouldn't expect anything less from a professional. In fact, we the listeners benefit greatly from Lino's work ethic, as we end up getting the best show in Catholic radio. Reading today's Gospel is a small reminder that we should always keep Lino in our prayers, so that he doesn't become so overwhelmed with working for the good of Christ that he misses out on being a part of Christ's goodness.

Countdown to Glory - 22 days

With 22 days until The Predicament turns 39, we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts (what happened to our countdown this weekend? I had a very busy weekend since I'm moving to Pennsylvania on Thursday, and the bumper on my car fell off). Enjoy!

Lk 10:25-37

There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said,
“Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law?
How do you read it?”
He said in reply,
“You shall love the Lord, your God,
with all your heart,
with all your being,
with all your strength,
and with all your mind,
and your neighbor as yourself.”
He replied to him, “You have answered correctly;
do this and you will live.”
But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus,
“And who is my neighbor?”
Jesus replied,
“A man fell victim to robbers
as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho.
They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.
A priest happened to be going down that road,
but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.
Likewise a Levite came to the place,
and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.
But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him
was moved with compassion at the sight.
He approached the victim,
poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them.
Then he lifted him up on his own animal,
took him to an inn, and cared for him.
The next day he took out two silver coins
and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction,
‘Take care of him.
If you spend more than what I have given you,
I shall repay you on my way back.’
Which of these three, in your opinion,
was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?”
He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.”
Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

I'm trying to figure out whether this parable that Jesus teaches, or the story of the Prodigal Son, is the most famous parable. We all know the story. A man is beaten and left for dead, ignored by the holy ones, and it ends up being a Samaritan, a despised man, who helps the beaten traveler. The phrase gets tossed around like crazy: any time someone does something nice for another, they're called A Good Samaritan.

Is Lino a Good Samaritan? Would he help someone in need? The answer is an emphatic yes. Lino finds way to incorporate charitable giving on the show, taking suggestions from callers during Christmas on what charities he should donate to. He invites the likes of Fr. Rob and Fr. Jim to appear with him on the radio. And of all the sins Lino mentions that he's guilty of (there's a lot of them!), he never mentions tithing, so he's good there.

In fact, Lino get's his reputation as a Good Samaritan by the way he treated his former producer Maureen McMurray. When Maureen was left for dead by National Public Radio and Martha Stewart Living, Lino, despised as he may be by the Liberal community, was there to help. He took her in, gave her a job producing radio programming. It was through this breath of kindness that The Catholic Guy became what it is known for today: Top quality programming from Lino, Lou, and Maureen.

All thanks to the generosity of Rulli.

Countdown to Glory - 24 days

With 24 days until The Predicament turns 39, we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts. The goal? Take each day's readings and find a way to apply one of the passages to the life of Lino Rulli. And then, we have something VERY special waiting for Lino on October 26...and no, it won't require a restraining order. Job 38:1, 12-21; 40:3-5

The LORD addressed Job out of the storm and said:
Have you ever in your lifetime commanded the morning
and shown the dawn its place
For taking hold of the ends of the earth,
till the wicked are shaken from its surface?
The earth is changed as is clay by the seal,
and dyed as though it were a garment;
But from the wicked the light is withheld,
and the arm of pride is shattered.
Have you entered into the sources of the sea,
or walked about in the depths of the abyss?
Have the gates of death been shown to you,
or have you seen the gates of darkness?
Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth?
Tell me, if you know all:
Which is the way to the dwelling place of light,
and where is the abode of darkness,
That you may take them to their boundaries
and set them on their homeward paths?
You know, because you were born before them,
and the number of your years is great!
Then Job answered the LORD and said:
Behold, I am of little account; what can I answer you?
I put my hand over my mouth.
Though I have spoken once, I will not do so again;
though twice, I will do so no more.

God asks Job if he was around for the creation. Asks him if he had ever walked in the depths of the abyss.

I think this would be a verse to keep in mind each time I think to criticize Lino on the show. That's not to say that Lino is above criticism, as we've had our differences in the past. But before thinking, "Oh that's terrible, I can't believe they'd do that on the radio!" maybe I should stop and put myself in Lino's shoes. I'm sure he could say something similar to me: "Where were you when we were putting today's show together? Have you done your part by showing up to staff meetings? Do you talk for three hours a day worrying about whether or not people will enjoy it?"

So when Lino does something ridiculous that you might not agree with, it's ok to criticize. Just make sure you put yourself in his shoes first.

'The dust of your town that clings to our feet,
even that we shake off against you.'
Yet know this: the Kingdom of God is at hand.
I tell you,
it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day
than for that town."

When I read this passage of scripture, I immediately thought of Lino's big speech at the Catholic New Media Celebration. Need a reminder? Here's the speech.

In the speech, Lino echoes Christ's words when he says "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few." The thing with Catholic media is that it has to be cutting edge. It has to be fun and it has to be interesting, otherwise nothing gets done and people ignore it and Christ's redeeming love. I don't think I'm being too melodramatic when I say that the key to winning souls for Christ is by giving people a good product.

That's what Christ wants from us: Trying our very best and giving it all for him. The workers, i.e. people who are actually talented, seem to be few and far between, with most of Catholic media preferring to rest on their laurels and do things the way they've always been done (there's exceptions, but your average Catholic radio station would put young people to sleep).

It's one of the reasons I love Lino's show: because he actually does care about putting out a good product and reaching people. "Boring" Catholic radio may actually work for a few people, but we need to examine other ways in which we can reach people, uncomfortable and unorthodox as they may be.

Because the harvest is plentiful. And the talent is few.

Thanks Lino!

Yes, we would have done a 39-day countdown since he'll turn 39, but we're not paid for this, and as such, we show signs of laziness now and then, much to our amusement Lino's annoyance. Enjoy!

John 1:47-51
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
"Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him."
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."
Nathanael answered him,
"Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Do you believe
because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
You will see greater things than this."
And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
you will see heaven opened
and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

Jesus' words today fit in well with Lino Rulli Day.

"You will see greater things than this." As great as Lino Rulli day was, I think we will see greater things. True, the aim of the show is to lead us closer to God (while making us laugh), and seeing heaven opened and the angels of God will certainly be better than a radio show, but I think we will see greater things than the trip to Minnesota soon.

Call me crazy, but we haven't seen much of a shakeup lately on the show. Everything is standing pat, no real life-changing events (save for Lou buying a house). But before the end of year, who knows, maybe Maureen and Danny will conceive a child. Maybe Lino will settle down with someone special and stop being so damn picky, as Greg Willits mentioned on a recent show.

Bottom line, if Lino and crew keep doing what they're doing, some great, wonderful things will definitely be coming their way.

Countdown to Glory - 27 days

With 27 days until The Predicament turns 39, we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts. Enjoy!

Luke 9:51-56
When the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled,
he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem,
and he sent messengers ahead of him.
On the way they entered a Samaritan village
to prepare for his reception there,
but they would not welcome him
because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.
When the disciples James and John saw this they asked,
"Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven
to consume them?"
Jesus turned and rebuked them,
and they journeyed to another village.

What a fitting reading the day before Lino Rulli Day. Everywhere Lino goes, it seems as if he's very well received. In Rome, they put him on Vatican Radio. In Las Vegas and New Orleans, he gets really nice rooms. He gets cheered by thousands at the Papal Youth Rally in Yonkers, N.Y.

Lino certainly had it better than Jesus.

That's not to say that Lino's success and popularity shouldn't be looked down upon. It's just a friendly reminder that so many times as Christians, we have it a lot better than Christ and his disciples did 2,000 years ago. To my knowledge, they haven't ran Lino out of any town he's visited. And just like Christ, Lino has journeyed to yet another village where he can spread the love of God.

Countdown to Glory - 29 days

With 29 days until The Predicament turns 39, we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts. Enjoy!

Luke 16:19-31
Jesus said to the Pharisees:
"There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen
and dined sumptuously each day.
And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps
that fell from the rich man's table.
Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.
When the poor man died,
he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried,
and from the netherworld, where he was in torment,
he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off
and Lazarus at his side.
And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me.
Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,
for I am suffering torment in these flames.'
Abraham replied,
'My child, remember that you received
what was good during your lifetime
while Lazarus likewise received what was bad;
but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.
Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established
to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go
from our side to yours or from your side to ours.'
He said, 'Then I beg you, father,
send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers,
so that he may warn them,
lest they too come to this place of torment.'
But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the prophets.
Let them listen to them.'
He said, 'Oh no, father Abraham,
but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
Then Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'"

In today's readings, the rich man, though burning in Hell, didn't even apologize to Lazarus. Instead of telling Lazarus he was sorry, he tried ordering Lazarus around like a servant. He obviously didn't learn anything despite being tormented.

Lino says on the air that he isn't a rich man. I believe him, but the fact that he can afford his own apartment in NYC seems to say that he's at least comfortable. But despite his material possessions and success in life, Lino is the opposite of this rich man in Jesus' parable. While the rich man ignored those less fortunate, Lino reaches out. He's mentioned on air that he sponsors a child overseas each month, employs a cleaning lady (giving back to our economy), and never mentions lack of tithing as a sin he deals with (but it's something I definitely struggle with.

I believe that if anyone had a sincere, urgent problem, Lino would reach out (he loaned a guy $1,000 and to this day, I don't believe he ever got the money back) and help. He's definitely not like the rich guy. And as such, we can safely assume that Lino won't be burning in Hell anytime soon.

Countdown to Glory - 30 days

With 30 days until The Predicament turns 39, we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts. The goal? Take each day's readings and find a way to apply one of the passages to the life of Lino Rulli. And then, we have something VERY special waiting for Lino on October 26...and no, it won't require a restraining order. Yes, we would have done a 39-day countdown since he'll turn 39, but we're not paid for this, and as such, we show signs of laziness now and then (such as today's which appears with only 2-3 hours before tomorrow). Enjoy!

Luke 9:43b-45
While they were all amazed at his every deed,
Jesus said to his disciples,
"Pay attention to what I am telling you.
The Son of Man is to be handed over to men."
But they did not understand this saying;
its meaning was hidden from them
so that they should not understand it,
and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

In this passage, nobody knows what Jesus means when he says something, even though what he said was a great thing.

Lino has a gig on the show where he says something meaningful, and the Sirius XM voiceover guy says "Lino really said something." It sounds cocky and arrogant sometimes, but as Maureen pointed out one day, due to the fact pace of the show, it's good that Lino stops and lets people reflect on the great thing he just said.

Despite the shows nuttiness and innuendo (in your endo? Hey oh!), it's also filled with poignant moments, such as the really great conversation Lino had with Fr. Jim on Friday about why he has the desire to help people.

Countdown to Glory - 31 days (Friday, Sept. 25)

With 31 days until The Predicament turns 39, we thought we'd start a countdown of sorts. The goal? Take each day's readings and find a way to apply one of the passages to the life of Lino Rulli. And then, we have something VERY special waiting for Lino on October 26...and no, it won't require a restraining order. Yes, we would have done a 39-day countdown since he'll turn 39, but we're not paid for this, and as such, we show signs of laziness now and then. Enjoy!

Luke 9:18-22.
Once when Jesus was praying in solitude,
and the disciples were with him,
he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
They said in reply, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah;
still others, 'One of the ancient prophets has arisen.'"
Then he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
Peter said in reply, "The Christ of God."
He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.
He said, "The Son of Man must suffer greatly
and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed and on the third day be raised."

So many people have so many crazy thoughts on who Christ is. A good teacher, a great medium, or as Billy Joel said, some guy hanging on a cross in a church. And in this verse, the disciples give many ideas that even people had back then, when they could see him walking around.

Lino has mentioned on the show before that he wasn't sure if he'd be one of the ones who believed in Christ or joined in with the others to yell "Crucify him!" And it'd be easy to sit back and criticize Lino for that: "You host a Catholic radio show, you should be better and holier than that!" It's easy to hold others who are in the public eye up to a ridiculous standard, just so we can feel better about ourselves when they screw up and we get a few good laughs out of it. Picking on religious leaders is something people have done throughout the ages, and the criticism that Lino gets is no different.

But it's that honesty he has that makes him so endearing, and a lot more fun to listen to than most other radio hosts. He has enough respect for the audience to admit when he has failed. Lino isn't some high and mighty guy who looks down on us because of our sins. He doesn't cast stones when we fail (unless its his fan club that he goofs on for not updating this blog enough). He struggles with the same things we do, because he is a human being, albeit a kick-ass awesome one.

Lino has the stones to keep it honest on the radio. And that's why I've only missed two shows in the last two years (bragging I know). If more spiritual leaders could be as honest as Lino can be on the radio, I think The Church would be a much stronger place.

Almost there

In just a few hours, we'll be without Maureen. It's 12:45 p.m. central time, which means that Maureen will be done with The Catholic Guy in five hours and fifteen minutes.

We'll see you in about 2 hours and 15 minutes for the live-blogging. Until then, give Bob Dunning a listen. After the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, he should put on a great show.
