The best and worst of Lino Rulli's Twitter, 7.24.11 through 7.31.11

Lino Rulli is very proficient when it comes to Twitter. He tweets on a daily basis, free of charge at twitter.com/linorulli. Sometimes his tweets are solid, other times not so much. Each week, we find four tweets of Lino's that are solid, funny, and worth the time it took to read, and then we find a dud. Hey, nobody's perfect.

The best
Brett Favre is trending again. If he's not going back to the NFL, I think he should take Weiner's seat in Congress.  - July 24

NFL players & owners agree to terms. There WILL be a season! Sadly, the Detroit Lions are already mathematically eliminated.  - July 25

Looks like Donovan McNabb is coming to my Vikings! We love old QB's. I haven't seen this many old guys since the last Papal Conclave. - July 27

Just boarded the flight to NY and didn't get upgraded to First Class. Where is God when you need Him?  - July 31

Groan-inducing
Another restful night of sleep in a hotel. Thankfully, no woman tried to break in and steal anything or I'd have had to Trebek her. - July 31

The fun is just beginning (again!)

Now that I know Fr. Rob will be a permanent fixture on the show starting in September, I feel so much better. I think it will be good for all of us who listen and for Lino and Ryan too.

The last few months have been really stressful on Lino I would guess, but he has really hung in there and been a real trouper for us. Fr. Rob stepped up to the plate (I'm sure he would love that anaolgy) and helped his friend through a difficult transition.

Hearing them play games like "Catholic Password" and "Do you watch more TV than a parish priest" these last couple of weeks has made me feel better. Its like sitting in a comfortable chair, or watching an old favorite movie. It gives you a sense of peace and stability. It's like being home again after a time away.

Thank goodness Dustin (and kudos to him for staying on top of the situation) was able to secure information that Fr. Jim will still be appearing from time to time on the show. Now we look forward to Lino and Fr. Rob's coverage of World Youth Day next month. For now, let's hope he has a great weekend in Minnesota. (No enormous fireballs needed, Lord.)

All is well in Linoland today, folks!

Fr. Rob joins the show Full time!

Lino revealed his big announcement on today's show. For those not in the know, Lino said on Maureen's last day that he was praying for"someone to say yes," when it came to taking over the position of producer. It took a long time, but on Friday, July 22, in the year of our Lord 2011, Lino revealed via Facebook that he finally got the answer from God. And it was a good one, the response Lino wanted from God.

After a day of teasing the audience, under orders from his boss not to reveal the news, Lino made the announcement on Friday that Fr. Rob Keighron is a permanent addition to the Catholic Channel!

Lino mentioned that while praying, he got a really nice job offer that would have allowed him to work with friends in a different, non-Catholic radio setting. He got so frustrated that the night before his answer, he begged God to just say no, that he was tired of waiting. And then, the answer came in.

This obviously raises a huge question: What becomes of Fr. Jim Chern? We honestly have no idea what happens to Fr. Jim's normal Friday slot. Does he appear with Fr. Rob? Does Fr. Jim become a special attraction instead of a once-a-week man? We love Fr. Rob,  but we love Fr. Jim just as much, and would be heartbroken/annoyed if we didn't get to hear him on the radio anymore.

(UPDATE: Lino stated on his Facebook wall that Fr. Jim is still a part of the team, just a little busier. A huge sigh of relief!)

Hopefully we'll get an answer on this soon, along with another answer: who gets hired to do technical work? Fr. Rob may be a great guy, but he can't run a board or answer phone calls, and this would be too much to ask of Ryan. Along with Fr. Rob, we're sure to get someone else on the show, even if it's in an anonymous role.

I myself have to say that I was sour on Fr. Rob from the beginning, but I've grown to enjoy the red-haired malcontent priest from Queens. I'm excited about Fr. Rob joining the show full-time, as Lino always works best when he has someone to banter with.

This hopefully keeps the show great!

Top 5 Prayer Possibilites for Lino Rulli

On yesterday's show, Lino talked about how he had been praying for something for several months and last week his prayer came true. He said it was in regard to the show but he was not free to announce what exactly he was praying for. This, of course, just makes my imagination run rampant so I thought of five possible things the Lino could have been praying for. These are just figments of my imagination and since my imagination can be a scary place, we won't get into TOO much detail.

#5) The show is hitting the road- Several months ago, Lino talked about how he wanted to take the show to Iraq or Afghanistan so that he could thank the troops and talk about the good work that the chaplains are doing there. Perhaps, Lino will be the next Bob Hope.

#4) They are getting rid of the commercial breaks-The breaks have been a point of contention for Lino ever since they started making him take more of them a few years ago. Maybe Lino is going to announce that he has received a dispensation from having to do breaks. From now on, we get 180 full minutes of Lino every show.

#3) In-Studio Cameras- Something else that Lino has been trying to get for years. Fans have been clamoring to be able to actually see what has been going on in studio. Can't you imagine, being able to log in and see the hilarity?

#2) Maureen is coming back!- At first, I thought maybe the announcement will have to do with getting a new producer and then I realized---Lino is just getting his old producer back! It's not like she hasn't left and come back before.

#1) A new name for The Catholic Channel- We all know that Lino is the biggest draw on The Catholic Channel, so I predict a whole new name, "The Lino Rulli Channel-All Lino, All the Time." They could play not only new TCGS episodes but also Lino at Large and "best of" after "best of" after "best of."

Those are just five of the ideas that were swimming around in my head. Of course, I have more but since it's my first post on CatholicGuyShow.com I figure I should restrain myself so I don't have to get fired already. What ideas do you guys have?

2011 TCGS Draft

Lino Rulli and Fr. Rob Keighron held the 2011 Catholic Guy Show draft, in which they picked celebrities that would most benefit the Catholic Church if they became a full, practicing member (I personally would have chosen Barack Obama or Steve Jobs).

Here is a rundown of their picks:

Lino's number one pick: Oprah Winfrey
Lino cited her influence, and even though it could be waning (no more daily show), he reasoned that she got Obama into the White House, so she could definitely get some people into the Church.

Fr. Rob's number one pick: Lady Gaga
"Who has more influence than Lady Gaga right now?" Fr. Rob asked. They cited her 11 million Twitter followers and general popularity among many different types of people, before mentioning that she does indeed claim to be very Catholic.

Start practicing a little more visibly, Lady G. I know you can pull it off!

Audience picks (in order): The Dali Llama, Joel Olsteen, Harry Potter, Prince William and Katherine, James Earl Jones, Rush Limbaugh, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, Howard Stern, Jud Apatow. Olsteen and Howard scored high, while Jones and the Sheltons didn't get much love from Lino and the malcontent priest.

With time running out on the segment, Lino read off the list of picks that audience members on hold suggested. Brock Lesnar, the leader of China, Tier Woods, Yao Meng, Jimmy Buffett, the Kardashians and Barack Obama.

And Fr. Rob closed out the segment with more of his picks. Webster (the dictionary guy), Captin America, Warren Buffett, Lebron James and Mark Zuckerberg.

It's a fun segment that doesn't get overblown. I liked Lino and Fr. Rob's number one choices, but I think they discounted the popularity of country music. Shelton converting would be the talk of the town in the Bible Belt.

Meet Lino's new dating coach: Fr. Rob?

Lino! Really? You were asking Fr. Rob for advice on how to approach a woman?

Ok, so you see the woman lectoring at church, and she makes "eye contact" with you a couple of times, and you were completely distracted all during mass by this woman (who you describe as the "marrying kind") and in the end, you never even spoke to her? Even Fr. Rob knew that was a missed opportunity. He was giving you some sound advice before he started speaking in his creepy Muppet voice and laughing hysterically in the background.

So, you felt starting up a conversation out of nowhere after you already blessed yourself with holy water and were heading out of the church would be awkward. That makes sense. What about just going back to that parish again and waiting for an opportunity to present itself? I never met anyone who learned to swim without getting in the water. You're at church. Say hello.

Save The Catholic Channel?! Maybe Mama Rulli can.

The wonderful (as always) episode with Mama Rulli playing Hickety Pickety really got me to laughing....and thinking.

Recently there was programming cuts and changes at The Catholic Channel.....mainly Bob Dunning's show being cancelled, and other shows rescheduled. Interesting how they put Lino's replay in the difficult 10 PM Eastern time slot.

I was very unhappy about the cuts and changes and complained like a good Catholic. I did get a personal reply from Joe Zwilling, the program director. He did explain that there were some budget cutbacks and they hope to bring Bob back someday. Well, that's going to take some money!

I don't know anyone who enjoys those awful Life, Love, and Health commercials except to goof on the things. I don't really like the Notre Dame sports, but they DO bring in some money. In our difficult economic times, let's not turn away money.

I had a meeting yesterday so had to catch the replay of The Catholic Guy. So here I am in bed, having a wonderful happy laugh at our precious Mama Rulli, and her son, of course. The more I hear her, the more I love her.

My suggestion: why don't we have Lino and his Mom record some commercials for TCC and play them throughout the day? That would sure get my attention! I've been going through some difficult times lately, and the laugh at Hickety Pickety, especially Esau Seesaw (Hairy Old Testament Guy and teeter-totter) made my heart much lighter. Thanks Lino and Mama Rulli! Love you both!!!

Lino's Answered Prayer

Unlike the song that this slightly-talented Garth Brooks wannabe sings, Lino did have answered prayers. He revealed on his Facebook wall that he had an answered prayer at 7:27 p.m. Friday, most likely in the form of a new producer.

We think its a new producer because when Maureen left the show, he specifically said he had someone in mind, and asked the audience to pray for that person to say yes. And he left another comment on his wall Friday that read, "Oh and I forgot to mention...yeah it's good news. Prayer answered affirmatively."

We have some guesses as to who this might be, but we'll keep our trap shut, mainly because we don't want to mention someone awesome, then someone less-awesome takes the job and fails to live up to the hype.

If Lino mentioned it on his wall on Friday though, there's a very good chance we'll get an update on Monday's show.

Lino the enigma

Just when I think I have Lino figured out, he says the exact opposite of what I expect him to say. This past week during his “advice” segment, he threw me for a loop. He had been asked to “settle a bet” for a woman who was seven months pregnant and who complained that her husband continued to go out, drink and have a good time when she couldn’t. The husband felt it was ok for him to ask her to be the designated driver so he could drink, and the wife felt it was selfish of him to drink in front of her when she couldn’t and to go out with his pals and have a few, while she sat home cooped up with her big belly.

Of course, I expected Lino to side with the guy. Fr. Rob certainly did. His take on it was that the father should go out and have fun while he could because after the baby was born, he’d be stuck at home helping with the baby. Lino, on the other hand, said that the husband should indeed stay home with his wife, not drink in front of her, and not go out with his buddies. He may not have agreed with the premise exactly, but he said he would do that for his wife, since she didn’t want him to.

Lino = self-sacrificing? Who knew? (This is the same guy who told his dating coach on the air last week that he was “making out” with a girl on a city street at the end of their afternoon date.)

So I guess one of the things we love about him most is that he keeps us guessing. We can never really know what he is going to say or how he is going to react.

Tweets of the week

In addition to being a funny guy on Catholic radio, Lino Rulli has turned to Twitter to entertain us. Some of the tweets are solid, while some of them inspire groans. Here are some of our favorites, along with this week's dud Twitter update (hey, not every tweet is a winner.

As always, you can decide for yourself by following Lino Rulli on Twitter, using the screen name @linorulli.

Fun tweets.

Welcome new writers!

As soon as they accept the invites in their mail boxes, you'll be able to welcome Jamie McAdams and LaJuan Tallo as the newest writers of catholicguyshow.com! Both bring considerable Lino experience to this blog: Jamie is a regular caller, and LaJuan gets retweeted by Lino from time to time.

I have no doubt that they will both be fantastic additions to this blog, and will hopefully take the load off of Allicia and I when it comes to regularly updating this blog with all things Lino.

We are still looking for someone to design artwork though. If you know Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, hit us up using the contact link at the top.

Facebook changes

To all the Facebook Lino Fans

We will be CLOSING The Lino Fans Facebook PAGE on August 1st.

Facebook made it easier for Lino to manage his own fan page. Lino has been very generous with responding and therefore alleviating the need for a 3rd party (however unofficial we are) to help manage questions and requests about the show. We have made the executive decision to close the page and direct all you loyal Linoans to his facebook page www.facebook.com/linorulli

This should not be a big shock, since we have been offering the page to Lino since it started. We are thrilled to be involved with the Lino Rulli Fandom and will continue to offer content on the blog at www.catholicguyshow.com.

You may find Lino's facebook and twitter account information on his website www.CatholicGuy.com

Help Wanted

We're looking for some help. Three people who love Lino just as much as we do, and feel comfortable sharing that love with the world!

We're looking for two new writers, who can blog something Lino-related at least once a week, and someone who is good with graphics that can come up with fun artwork for slides and posts.

If you think you are that person, fire off an email to tcgsfanclub@yahoo.com. It's always good to have fresh opinions, and lets be honest, nobody wants to hear from me ALL THE TIME.

Thanks for the support!

The Catholic Guy with Lino Rulli...and Fr. Rob?

Fans of Fr. Rob Keighron (we count ourselves among the biggest) were given a real treat last week. Three brand new episodes of The Catholic Guy Show featuring Fr. Rob!

I know that when Lino hires a new producer, Fr. Rob probably won't be appearing three times a week, as Lino will have someone new to banter with (and Fr. Rob being a principal of a school is probably time consuming). Still, we hope that there are more Fr. Rob appearances like this week (and a few more does of Fr. Jim Chern would be welcome as well).

Fr. Rob can be mean, abrasive and downright silly sometimes. But he's certainly relatable in his annoyances, and when it matters, he really shows off great knowledge of the faith.

To another round of Fr. Rob!

How The Catholic Guy Got Me Pregnant

Yes, I'm being dramatic...

The only thing Lino Rulli and The Catholic Guy Show had to do with me being "great with child" was introducing me to my husband. Which I am ever so incredibly grateful for.

We just wanted to share the new with all the loyal fans... especially since LinoRulli.net scooped us with our engagement news!!

And as any good Catholic couple, we've gotten ourselves a honeymoon baby. Thank you Creighton Model for being clear and effective!

dustin and I would like to thank everyone for their love, support, and prayers.

New schedules

Our friends at linorulli.net have done a fascinating job detailing the changes at The Catholic Channel, with the most obvious being the departure of Bob Dunning from the afternoons (I for one will really miss Bob Dunning: he is a good radio host and is a very kind man). Apparently, The Catholics Next Door are moving to the afternoons from 1-4 p.m. ET, Gus is getting up an hour, daily Mass gets a replay at 11 a.m., and the hour-long shows that appeared at 1 p.m. (Conversation with the Archbishop, Sounds from the Spires, etc) get moved back to noon.

Lino's replay also gets a shift, moving to 10 p.m. ET. Which means, instead of an "overnight" replay, it's a late night replay.

I have mixed feelings about this. Sure, it's a more accessible time slot, but there were a lot of listeners that could only listen to the show from midnight to 3 a.m.. It feels like those people were left out in the cold, but they'll at least get to discover The Catholics Next Door, who get an overnight replay from now on.

The other negative I can find in this is that TCC has really scaled back on the amount of on-air talent. Since January, two shows and four hours of original content is getting replaced with replay programming. I just hope and pray that this isn't a sign of The Catholic Channel being financially strapped, that it's just a move that will benefit listeners more (full disclosure: I am a Sirius stock-holder, but have no idea what kind of financial reports The Catholic Channel has). Then again, it's wrong of me to speculate without having the financials in front of me.

Now, on to the positives. With Greg and Jennifer being such good friends with Lino, I think we'll see a return of the toss that proceeded Lino's show. The toss, for those not in the know, is that moment at the end of the show where the host and the upcoming show's host have witty banter and talk about the upcoming show. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert do this every now and then, and Lino and Fr. Dave banter about Busted Halo at the end of Lino's show. Hopefully we'll be treated to a toss from The Willits to Lino each day.

The other benefit is future lock-in shows. The lock-in took place once, in the summer of 2010, and was a wild success. But it seems hard to do given how late at night the replay was. With the replay moving to 10 p.m., it seems like more lock-in shows will be possible given the earlier time.

We look forward to the new schedule, and hope it somehow benefits the audience.

Happy 4th!

Hi Fellow Lino Fans! Sorry I've been quiet lately. Looking forward to having Lino back live starting Tuesday but am not happy about the new schedule. Very glad Lino and Fr Dave have their same spots, but I can't hear the specialty shows once work starts back, plus I will miss Bob Dunning. As a loyal listener to TCC since Day 1, I feel the channel does a very poor job providing listeners with shows they enjoy.

I've done this in the past, the way past.....Lino you're going to have to be extra funny to take my mind off the disappointment of the new Catholic Channel schedule changes! You can do it :)

(Hopefully no more whale feces.)

FAQs

Q: Does Lino pay you to write?
A: No. We do this for free. And for the joy of getting mentioned on air.

Q: How can I sign up to write?
A: We are not taking new writers at this time.

Q: What does Lino Rulli think of this blog?
A: We wouldn't know. He's very busy! Actually, he appreciates the work we do (he put down on his Facebook that the blog was MINT and tweeted about the redesign). After all, we are the positive place for Lino Rulli. And that's gotta be good for the ego.

Q: I want to say something mean about Lino. Where can I go?
A: Anywhere but here (but we really prefer if you never EVER say anything bad about Lino). Since this is a fan club, we keep things positive (and look for the good in anything negative). We do have a form letter on the Web site though if you need to say something bad.

Q: Who's the best looking writer on this blog?
A: Me. dustin Faber. And that will change until one of my colleagues notices this proclamation and issues a rebuttal. But even then, would you really believe them? Trust me on this. (UPDATE 01/12/12: It will always be dustin.)
